CHICAGO
PUBLIC
BATHS
Located at 1849 S. Throop Street, this project reimagines the site of the former Pilsen Public Bath, originally opened in 1908 and later demolished along with the surrounding block. Between 1894 and 1918, Chicago constructed 19 municipal bathhouses to serve working-class neighborhoods, many of which no longer exist. Situated on one of the original lots, the proposed bathhouse draws inspiration from historic Turkish and Russian public baths once found throughout the city, reintroducing a civic space for wellness, ritual, and community while acknowledging the layered social history of the site.
