HOUSE
IN WHITE
The House In White was designed by Kazuo Shinohara in 1966 and located in Suginami-ku, Tokyo, Japan. He observed that traditional Japanese houses of ordinary people were closed in, black, and for domestic activities. On the other hand, wealthy people had houses that were white and open to outside, so the owners could enjoy beautiful views. “House in White” was the attempt to combine closed/black and white/open, which are two elements that belonged to opposite sides of traditional Japanese architecture. The square space under the pyramid-shaped roof was divided into two areas with an asymmetrical 2:1 ratio. The smaller half was further divided into two stories. Shinohara disassembled the traditional meanings of architectural elements and re-assembled them into one house.
