UNIVERSAL
DESIGN
Building upon the project, Type, More, Type, Another Type, a collection of easily recognizable symbols have been transformed into both signs and structures. The resulting buildings unmistakably represent their function through form and construction. This design method is straightforward. The symbol’s form determines and changes the architectural program and organization. In contrast to what Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown would call “decorated sheds”—generic structures with added signs and decor that denote their purpose—these buildings are generic structures made in the form of the symbols themselves. Architectural symbolism is immediately understood because the forms explicitly tell onlookers what each building’s function is.
